Common questions about the Ovulation Calculator

Ovulation typically occurs around 14 days before the start of your next period. For someone with a standard 28-day cycle, that is approximately day 14. However, cycles vary considerably · in a 30-day cycle, ovulation tends to occur around day 16; in a 24-day cycle, around day 10. Apps and calculators estimate your fertile window based on your average cycle length, but the most accurate methods are ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) or basal body temperature (BBT) tracking.

The egg released during ovulation survives for only 12-24 hours. However, your fertile window is wider than this · about 5-6 days · because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days. This means conception is possible from intercourse in the 5 days before ovulation through to the day of ovulation itself.

Common signs include: a change in cervical mucus to a clear, slippery, egg-white consistency; a slight rise in basal body temperature (0.2-0.5°C) after ovulation; mild one-sided pelvic pain (mittelschmerz) in some women; light spotting; breast tenderness; and increased libido. Ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge that precedes ovulation by 24-36 hours and are considered the most reliable home method.
