Common questions about the Sleep Cycle Calculator
A sleep cycle is a recurring sequence of sleep stages that the brain passes through during a night of sleep. Each cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of four stages: three stages of non-REM sleep (light sleep, then progressively deeper slow-wave sleep) followed by one stage of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, where most vivid dreaming occurs. A typical adult completes 4-6 full cycles per night.
Waking during deep slow-wave sleep (stage 3) causes sleep inertia ยท the groggy, disoriented feeling that can last 30 minutes to an hour. Waking at the end of a cycle, when sleep is lightest (transitioning out of REM), makes it much easier to feel alert and refreshed. Sleep cycle calculators use this principle to suggest optimal wake times that land at the lightest phase of sleep.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the CDC recommend 7-9 hours of sleep per night for adults aged 18-64. Adults over 65 may need 7-8 hours. Teenagers need 8-10 hours, school-age children 9-12 hours, and infants 12-16 hours. Consistently getting fewer than 7 hours is associated with increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and impaired cognitive function.
If you need to wake at 6:00 AM and want to complete full sleep cycles, ideal bedtimes are approximately 10:15 PM (5 cycles, ~7.5 hours), 11:45 PM (4 cycles, ~6 hours), or 9:00 PM (if you can fit in 6 cycles of about 9 hours). The 15-minute offset accounts for average sleep onset latency ยท the time it takes most people to fall asleep after lying down. Adjust based on how quickly you personally fall asleep.
